Understand your bill

How your energy bill actually works

  • Most people have no idea what's on their energy bill.

And understanding it is the single biggest step to a better deal. We're going to show you how.

  • Energy plans are confusing. And that's by design.

Over 30 retailers and thousands of plans. In Sydney they all resell the same network. The complexity keeps you from ever really understanding your plan.

  • They make it complicated so you don't bother.

Most people never switch. The ACCC reports that households who stay on the same plan for years pay around $221 more a year than those who switch.

  • Understand your bill and you understand how you can save.

Find the best plan in your area, and know when there are welcome offers worth taking. It's simpler than you think.

  • It comes down to two things.

A daily supply charge just to be connected, plus a usage rate for what you actually use.

  • Rates vary widely.

Households next door to each other could be paying very different rates.

Supply rate typical $1.10 / day

    $0.80 / day$1.70 / day

Usage rate typical 39c / kWh

    25c / kWh45c / kWh
  • Then there are welcome offers.

A credit to sign you up, but the ongoing rate can be higher. They bank on you staying for years, so they make it back and more.

  • Compare regularly and stay ahead.

Grabbing welcome offers and lower rates, then comparing again down the track, is how you keep the upper hand.

  • Now it's your turn.

    Your choice from here.

  • Do it yourself.

Go through the Homerun Switch flow and find the best plan for you. Switch by 30 September for up to a $150 Visa Gift Card.

How it works

Three steps. One bill sorted. No spam calls.

  1. Complete the form

Pop in your address, plus a couple of quick details about your place. Takes a minute, no account needed.

  2. See the plans side by side

We pull electricity and gas plans from Australian retailers, then line up your plan today against the alternatives, so you can compare like for like.

  3. Select one and switch

Found a plan you like? Lock it in and our partner handles the whole switch. The paperwork, the changeover, all of it. No calls to make, no forms to fill. You just move onto the better plan.

After you switch

What happens after you switch

  1. You get a confirmation email from your new energy provider

  2. They will automatically cancel your old plan for you, nothing for you to do

  3. You will receive your final bill from your old plan, to cover the period since your most recent bill

  4. The switch over will be seamless, you won't even notice

  5. You wait until you get your first bill

  6. Around 90 days later you'll receive your Homerun Visa Gift Card reward

No catch

Straight up about how this works.

Here’s the honest version, because you’d ask anyway:

  • We compare, you decide. Homerun Switch lines up electricity and gas plans from Australian retailers so you can see what’s available and how it compares to what you’re on now.
  • We can’t promise you’ll save money. There are clear regulations around promising energy savings, and rightly so. Whether you end up on a better plan depends on your current retailer, where you live and how you use energy. We show you the options. What you do with that is up to you.
  • We may earn a commission if you switch. If you choose to switch through us, we may receive a fee from the retailer. It doesn’t affect which plans we show you or how they’re ranked, and it helps us keep building products that make sharehouse life easier.
  • We’re not an energy retailer. Homerun is an Australian app for running a sharehouse. We don’t generate or sell energy.

We compare plans from a panel of 10 Australian retailers, not the whole market. The comparison and the switch are powered by CIMET Sales Pty Ltd ABN 72 620 395 726.

Before you start

The questions people ask first.

What is Homerun?

Homerun is a platform for renters to manage their household, built specifically for sharehouses.

Whilst building the utilities part of the app, we saw how so many households didn’t understand their bills or compare plans very often.

So we built Homerun Switch to help more houses understand their bills and then compare their plan easier.

We don’t compare the whole market, but the panel partners listed on this website. If you want to compare the full market, you can do so on the government-owned website: Energy Made Easy.

Is Homerun Switch Free?

Yes it is free, we utilise industry-leading comparison software to present the plans in a compliant way. This also may include a referral fee if you switch using us and meet eligibility criteria.

This fee helps us build more products for renters, like our Homerun App.

Does Homerun spam call me?

No one likes spam calls. I don't even answer phone calls from numbers I don't know anymore.

We won’t call you like other comparison sites do. We do send reminder emails if you start a switch and don’t get all the way through, and you can opt out of those at any time. If you do complete a switch, your new retailer may get in touch to confirm it. That’s them, not us.

What if I get confused by this all?

I get it, honestly I did too until we dove into building a product like this. But it's easy to understand once it clicks.

You don’t need to understand the energy market to use this. You need a recent bill and a few minutes. Switch reads what you’re paying now, lines that up against the plans available at your address, and shows you the difference in plain numbers.

If a plan isn’t clear, every one of them links through to the retailer’s own pricing and terms before you commit to anything. Nothing changes until you say yes, and you can close the tab at any point.

What is the difference between Homerun and Homerun Switch?

Homerun is our app for managing your household. It has a lot of Homerun Switch in it, as well as an easy way for your household to pay rent, split bills, and manage household admin. We're designing it for sharehouses, but a lot of it works for all rental households.

Homerun Switch is a spin off from our app, just focused on energy. You can understand your bill, compare plans and switch. We’re building a dashboard to manage your bills as well - watch this space!

How long does a Homerun Switch take?

A few minutes. You'll need your address and a few quick details about your place, plus your name and email so we can send your comparison.

Which retailers does Homerun compare?

We compare plans from a panel of 10 Australian retailers, and we'll always tell you how many up front. We don't compare the whole market, and we won't pretend to.

How does Homerun make money?

When you switch through Homerun Switch, the retailer pays us a referral fee. It's the same fee whoever you pick, so it doesn't change your price, which plans we show you, or the order they appear in.

Is switching with Homerun easy?

Yes. It usually takes a few minutes, your power isn't disconnected during the switch, and there's a cooling-off period if you change your mind.

A few minutes, that's it

See if your sharehouse is overpaying.

Answer three quick questions and we’ll line up electricity and gas plans next to what you’ve got now. No account, no obligation, no hold music.
